Steve Searle’s Sahara Slog
I have been contemplating a personal challenge as part of a charity fundraising event for some time now; but have always seemed to find a reason to put any plans on hold.
Well, here we are, I’m sat pondering what can be achieved - and quite frankly have run out of any excuses or rational arguments not to actually undertake something that will really push me; whilst raising some cash in the process.
I’m ‘reasonably’ fit, still have my own teeth and also have a niggling itch that needs scratching in terms of adventure and exploration. I have therefore joined a group of like minded individuals who will take part in a quest to North Africa, where we will undertake an 8 day trek through the Sahara Desert.
This is the real deal; using local guides and a caravan of camels to carry kit we will be trekking for 7 hours a day in isolation over the incredible but harsh landscape. It’ not an easy option – as well as the training programme I’m undertaking (plus the medical and vaccinations), this is proper desert – just sand, camels, tents, sand, dug latrines, rocks, more sand and wet wipes!! I am well aware that this takes me out of my comfort zone, but then so it should.
My chosen charity is very important to the family; my niece unfortunately has CF. Increasingly, it is left to the research work being carried out by Cystic Fibrosis Trust to spearhead the realistic possibility of a solution being found to this terrible condition; especially as Government funding is inevitably cut.
I really appreciate your support and thank you very much for any donations – all amounts are greatly received.
