Marwell workshop wet and wild and new offer

Yesterday morning was absolutely beautiful and I had planned a cycle ride but because I had to be home for an afternoon workshop I changed my mind, that and a few too many beers on Mothers day but we wont mention that 😉

Our workshop today was an afternoon bespoke workshop for George who came for one of our evening workshops before Christmas, George wanted to learn more about depth of field and shooting through cages as well as composition so marwell was the perfect choice for him.

Sue and I arrived just in time to grab a coffee and a bite and to catch up with George, we normally do this in the studio but we hd already done that so we were ready to roll, By the time we had coffee it was raining so we walked around the park quickly just to see what was happening and we stopped with the tigers who were out and about and George got some pretty awesome shots of them through the wire which was very encouraging. We then walked around the park a couple more times stopping at the other bog cats and the owls and a few others and each time concentrating on shooting through obstacles which is reasonably easy when you know how. Also important is the correct use of Depth of field shown in these photos.

Our workshops are designed to teach people how to control the camera so that its taking the photo they want not the photo the camera thinks they want. This makes photography much more creative and much more interesiting.

I also think todays workshop just goes to show that you don’t need to worry about the weather. It was awful today and yes the photos are superb so grab a coat and give us a call.

We hope that you enjoy these photographs from this workshop, we are very pleased with them and we feel they show off using your cameras AV and S mode very well and also the various focus and metering modes all of which are interesting to learn about and will take your photography to a new level.

Marwell workshop with Claire and james

Last Friday we took Claire and James to Marwell for our very popular One-2-One getting to know your camera workshop and we had the most amazing day.  We have known Claire and James for many years and photographed their wedding and their children and extended families many times so we were delighted when Claire called and said she had a Nikon 3200 for Christmas and wanted a day with us.  Soon after James asked if he could tag along as a “non interested in photography” partner so the 4 of us started here at our studio going through her camera and setting it up for the day.

We explained all the important settings to capture beautiful photographs both static and moving and how to create the most amazing depth of field as shown in these photos from the day. With a little work (ALL DONE IN CAMERA) the photos can be wonderful and so much more interesting than snaps that would be taken normally.

We show how to photograph through dirty glass and wire cages whirls loosing the cage and glass in the photo again all done in camera.  We also show how to create beautiful waterfall photos as well as many other things.  Its a wonderful way to spend a day I am I am really chuffed to hear that James has now also ordered a camera 🙂

We hope that you enjoy these photographs from this workshop, we are very pleased with them and we feel they show off using your cameras AV and S mode very well and also the various focus and metering modes all of which are interesting to learn about and will take your photography to a new level.

Day 2 of 3 with Ian Brooke Photography Embracing the Sun

Our second day with Ian was our Embracing the Sun workshop which is extremely popular with wedding photographers who want to be more confident photographing in bright sunshine rather than heading for shade, Sue and I photograph weddings all over the country and often on sunny beaches so are in a position where we have to shoot in the sun and once you master the art of shooting in the bright sunshine you will never look back and your photographs will be awesome.

We tend to shoot in one of 2 locations depending on the weather and time of year and today we chose a country estate and had a great shoot.  These photos were all taken in very bright sunshine most around mid day and I am sure you will agree they are awesome.

We started our day with heather and her 2 children working our way around the lake as the sun moved and it was just a great shoot,   The second shoot was With our friend Carolyn’s son who I am good pals with so that was such a laugh and then we finished in the afternoon with Stacey’s 3 children and that was a superb shoot and we all laughed so much and it was a fab way to finish our second amazing day.

If your looking to shoot more confidently in the sunshine then give us a call.

We hope that you enjoy these photographs from this workshop, we are very pleased with them and we feel they show off using your cameras AV and S mode very well and also the various focus and metering modes all of which are interesting to learn about and will take your photography to a new level.

Day 1 of a 3 day workshop with Ian Brooke Photography, studio portraits

We recently had a conversation with Ian Brook a new wedding photographer from manchester who was looking to expand into portraiture and boudoir and asked about 3 of our workshops, Our Portraiture workshop, Our Embracing the sun workshop and our Ecole Boudoir workshop so we booked them 3 days in for this week and after sourcing lots of models we started our week with our Portraiture workshop and we had some fab models lined up.

On this day we teach our clients how to pose our models and communicate which is all important and we yeah them how to set up the studio lights to give the perfect high key and low key photography and to control the camera and lighting and adjust as needed. Its a fun filled day guaranteed to give you a buzz, lots of information and a whole lot of photographs for your portfolio.

We started with Ella who we have worked with lots of times and as always she was perfect, we do not use many professional models anymore simply because they tend to pose too perfectly and our clients learn nothing from that so its important that our clients learn to posse and talk to our models as well as the obvious lighting and editing skills.

We then had Claire’s 3 Children and that was fun a proper mixed bag but again fantastic training for Ian and we had another superb shoot.

After lunch we then photographed 3 year old Tom to finish with who was just awesome 🙂  and made us all laugh so much.

We hope that you enjoy these photographs from this workshop, we are very pleased with them and we feel they show off using your camera in manual mode very well whilst controlling the lighting perfectly.

Whatever stage your photography is at we can help you to create a successful and profitable business or we can help improve your existing business so please contact us if you are looking for a photography workshop of any-kind 02380 767084   julianporter@mac.com    or txt  07720325336

Ben, his bridge camera and Marwell = a real fun day

On Tuesday we ran one of our very popular “getting to know your camera” workshops for one of our 2015 grooms Ben. When we booked Ben and Fiona’s wedding for next June Fiona asked about a workshop voucher for Ben’s 30th birthday present which was this week.

Ben has a Sony HX200V bridge camera and plans to honeymoon on Safari so a getting to know your camera workshop was the perfect start.  We started our day in the studio in classroom mode explaining the various settings in the camera and the science behind photography. The main aim with this workshop is to get our client to take control of his or her camera, easier said than done when most people out there use one of the many pre-set program modes and we teach our clients to use only the 3 creative modes, A, S (or T) and M which brings a whole new world of options including depth of field and selective focus which are 2 of the most important things.

As I am sure you will see the photos Ben took today show off the advanced features of the camera well, we taught him how to shoot using depth of field to avoid things in the photograph that you dont want like wire cages.  We also used S or TV mode to capture the moving subjects which although is tricky to start with, once you get the hand of panning its quite simple, Ben picked it up really well using some very fast moving cars.  Depending on the camera We use a variety of different focus modes too.  Auto focus modes can vary between different digital camera brands. Nikon and Canon’s two most popular modes are called AF-C (short for auto focus continuous) and AF-S (short for auto focus single). Many models also have AF-Aand MF (manual focus) modes to choose from as well although I prefer the first AF-C and AF-S.

AF-C is good use when photographing moving objects. When your camera is set to AF-C and you focus on a moving subject,  the focus will stay on the subject so long as your shutter button is held half way down. In other words, the camera will keep re-focusing as the subject moves. That is, so long as you keep your shutter button held half way down.

AF-S  is good for photographing subjects that don’t move, such as flowers or portraits etc. It locks the focus on the non moving object that you want to photograph.

Once at Marwell we walked around a couple times taking photos of all the animals that would play ball 🙂  the big cats were shy today but we had plenty of fun to be had so no complaints.

I am amazed at some of Ben’s photos especially bearing in mind he does not have a DSLR rather a bridge camera but it just goes to prove that all cameras work in the same way, of course lots of cameras and lenses have limitations but its all about working around those limitations to get the best we can from our cameras and thats just what Ben did.

I cant wait for Ben and Fiona’s wedding day and especially the honeymoon photos 🙂

We hope that you enjoy these photographs from this workshop the first couple are mine and the rest are Ben’s, we are very pleased with them and we feel they show off using your cameras AV and S mode very well and also the various focus and metering modes all of which are interesting to learn about and will take your photography to a new level.
