Jo and those cats

On Sunday we took our client Jo to Marwell for our “getting to know your camera” workshop and the results were nothing short of breathtaking. Thus was Jo’s second workshop with us you can see her first here. She originally wanted to learn how to take studio photos which she did very well on her day with us but before leaving she booked this day.

We started our day in the studio chatting about settings and generally catching up with what we would be aiming for today and that was learning to shoot through cages and glass, creating beautiful photographs in natural settings. We set off for Marwell and as always headed for the Owls simply because they offer a little of everything and can be quite tricky to get right.

After 5 minutes with the Owl’s we headed to the Snow Leopard’s and the magic started, Jo was super patient and her patience paid off because her photos were beautiful and well worth the wait. We then worked on improving her creativity, it was clear after 2 workshops she was able to take a great photo so this was an obvious next step. Jo is an Art teacher so it was an easy step too.  We spoke and worked with focus points which helped our framing and there fore creativeness and we had a great couple of hours.

My favourite part of the day was the leopards (not snow) and the Red Panda who we spent a while with, J had a 500mm lens so just perfect for the tree shots.

I am so pleased with Jo’s work today as she is. Jo has a great eye and a superb knack for finding the right spot and I am sure she is well on the road to making a great photographer.

We hope that you enjoy these photographs from this workshop, we are very pleased with them and we feel they show off using your cameras AV and S mode very well and also the various focus and metering modes all of which are interesting to learn about and will take your photography to a new level.

Anna and the big cats

Today we took Anna-marie to Marwell for one of our One-2-One marwell days and it was a huge success. We photographed Anna’s wedding back in 2012 and have photographed her family a few times since as well as keeping in touch on Facebook.  A few months ago Anna asked me about buying a camera and I gave her some advice and she purchased a lovely Nikon D3300 and a kit lens and booked this day in.

When Anna arrived spent an hour or so going over the camera controls. Some obvious and some not so but together they help you to control the camera and not the camera controlling your photos.

We then headed off to Marwell. It was bleak and dreary as we arrived but after a cuppa we walked around to the Owls a favourite starting place for us because of the challenging light and thick cages.

We then went onto the Snow Leopards and then around the park stopping at every opportunity and I must say getting some amazing photos along the way, Anna certainly has the eye for a good photo.

These were mostly taken through very thick cages or thick dirty glass and as part of our workshop we will teach you to do the same. We will show you how to make your camera only photograph what you want it to.

We then headed home for an hour or so in the editing suite where Anna’s hard work paid dividends, her photos were gorgeous and I am genuinely very happy for her. Having produced these after only 1 days tuition I am sure we will be seeing many more over the coming months.

We hope that you enjoy these photographs from this workshop, we are very pleased with them and we feel they show off using your cameras AV and S mode very well and also the various focus and metering modes all of which are interesting to learn about and will take your photography to a new level.

Portrait workshop with Jo

I was contacted a couple months ago by a lady called Jo enquiring about our workshops and she went on to say “so many things to learn and so little time”  I liked her style 🙂 and we arranged a portrait workshop to help Jo make the most of her camera with her young grandchildren.

Jo brought along her set of brand new studio lights and we unpacked and used them for our shot which was great and a perfect way for Jo to get used to her lights. After chatting through the setup and camera setup and a few practice shots on our ever patient monkey we were ready for action and that action arrived with my Cycling friends Caroline and Rob and their lovely daughter Milla who was an absolute joy to photograph and made the perfect model.  We had a lovely hour with Jo snapping away and having fun learning all about her new kit.

We then sat down for editing and Jo took to that so well too mainly because she already uses a Mac with Lightroom and Photoshop.

Next along was our good friend Jules with 4 month old James, this is probably the toughest age to photograph and Jo did well and got some lovely shots so I am so pleased for her. James is a very special little lad and Sue and I love him loads so it was great to get a cuddle.

Again afterwards a few edits then our last shoot was with the “super twins”  the Beans, Noah and Florence both awesome little people we have known since they were born some 7 weeks early 🙂

This rounded off a perfect day shooting and Jo learned a lot and got some awesome photos too.

Thank you to our lovely friends for coming along to model, you were all fantastic and disks are on the way to you as we speak.

We will be seeing Jo in 1 months time for our Marwell day which is half price at the moment !

Workshops for the United Nations

This past week we ran a 4 day workshop for Amina who is an ambassador for the United Nations based in Germany. She contacted us a few weeks back and we had planned for a weeks time but things changed last minute so we fitted the workshop in with a little juggling and it worked out fine.

Amina wants to be able to photograph her UN volunteers on location so we had to deal with all sorts of lighting bearing in mind she travels all over the world to placed like the Sudan and Nepal.

We stared with a Marwell day which was a lot of fun and then spent a morning editing before photographing a few models in the bright sunshine and this shoot was more about lighting than posing which is something she will not be so concerned with.

We also had a day shooting in the New Forest playing with darker environments as well as bright sunlight all within moments of each other to get Amina used to changing fast.

We had a wonderful few days and loved getting to know Amina. We are hoping to head over to Germany to run a workshop sometime later this year.

We hope that you enjoy these photographs from this workshop, we are very pleased with them and we feel they show off using your cameras AV and S mode very well and also the various focus and metering modes all of which are interesting to learn about and will take your photography to a new level.

Marwell photo training with Sophie

Yesterday we ran one of our One-2-One getting to know your camera workshops with Sophie who we met a few months ago at a corporate shoot in London. This is our shortest notice workshop ever 🙂 I had been talking to Sophie since November about a workshop and she called me at 9am this morning saying her job in Winchester had cancelled due to network issues and she asked if we were available to do the workshop. I had only a cycle planned so that was a no brainer and we agreed to meet here at the studio at 10am for our day.

We started as always with studio based classroom part going over cameras and settings, due to the short notice Sophie never brought her camera so she used one of our spare cameras but she is Nikon so everything was familiar apart from the weight of the cameras.

We then headed off to Marwell and Sophie picked everything up really well,  at one point we split up and set Sophie a challenge to photograph 3 things using the settings we had taught her and Sue and I sloped off for a coffee 🙂

We then all headed back to the studio to go over some editing and also to go over anything Sophie had problems with which to be honest was nothing because she did very well including the challenge we set her.

Sue and I had a fab time at Marwell today and I am pretty sure Sophie loved it too. I am genuinely really chuffed with todays photos given they were all taken through cages and wire and in pretty challenging lighting too, apart of course from the Meercats but those babies were just too adorable all cuddled up together to stay warm and out of the wind.

We hope that you enjoy these photographs from this workshop, we are very pleased with them and we feel they show off using your cameras AV and S mode very well and also the various focus and metering modes all of which are interesting to learn about and will take your photography to a new level.
